Osprey grew from one person’s desire to use and make more comfortable, longer lasting and functionally sound packs. Over the last forty-something years we’ve stayed true to this ethos as we’ve grown as a company and a brand and our company’s founder, Mike Pfotenhauer, is still the mad hatter leading our designs and innovations.

It started with a group of friends who wanted to make the world better. Their goal: shake up the outdoor industry with a better way of doing business. This is our story, and this is Gear For Good.

The SmartWool story starts in the heart of the Colorado Rockies where product ideas are born every time we step out our back door.
At the heart of our products is the highest quality Merino yarn available, from sheep raised in some of the most amazing places on earth. Places like the beautiful ranches of New Zealand and Uruguay.
But that’s only the beginning of our story. The timeless craftsmanship found in the American Southeast skillfully transforms fiber to form, ultimately making the world’s best performance socks, right here in America.

In 1988 Ellen and Eric Gil opened a 450-square-foot sock boutique called Sockshop and Shoe Company. That modest store has now grown to become an iconic cornerstone of downtown Santa Cruz. After over a decade in business, Ellen, Eric, and Cassandra continue to lead Socksmith Design to new heights. The goal is still the same: to bring the best creative novelty designs to sock lovers everywhere, always with excellent customer service and uncompromising quality.

Handmade locally in the beautiful Gunnison Valley, GunniBags are crafted from at least 75% recycled textiles and retired climbing rope. 10% of all proceeds go to support Gunnison Underdog Rescue, a local animal rescue organization. No two bags are made alike making each one wonderfully unique.

On a surf and ski trip through California, our founders were sleeping in a van, several miles up a dirt road near a secret hot spring. They awoke the next morning in subzero temperatures with a car that wouldn’t start. Far outside of cell reception, and confronted with an impossibly long walk into town, they decided to bundle up in their sleeping bags and drink whiskey while they waited for someone else to show up.
